How to Manage Stress During the Holidays – 6 Tips to Enjoy the Season

The holidays are a time for family, fun, and festivities. But unfortunately, for many individuals, the holidays can also be a source of stress. With increased financial pressures and the added stress of balancing family obligations, it can be challenging to keep the holidays enjoyable. As a mental health therapist, I have seen firsthand how stress can affect my clients during the holidays. Here, I will provide tips on managing stress around the holidays so everyone can enjoy the season.

Tip #1 – Set Expectations. Many people create unrealistic expectations for the holidays, which can lead to disappointment and stress. It’s essential to set realistic expectations that everyone can agree on. This may include setting a budget, planning ahead, or establishing gift boundaries. It’s also important to remember that the holidays don’t have to be perfect or similar to years past. As families change and grow, traditions and rituals often change as well. This may require you to re-evaluate your holiday traditions.

Tip #2 – Practice Self-Care. The holidays can be a time of increased tension and/or anxiety, and it is important to take time for yourself to reduce stress. This may include taking time for yourself to relax, exercise, and get enough sleep. In addition, focus on engaging in activities that you genuinely enjoy. It is also essential to get support from others. The holidays can bring up a lot of emotions, baggage, and discomfort for people, so seeking out the support of others can often help process these feelings. Most importantly, don’t wait until you are overwhelmed to start engaging in self-care practices. Avoiding this common pitfall can ensure you feel your best during the holidays.

Tip #3 – Focus on the Present. It can be easy to get caught up in the past and worry about the future. Instead, focus on the present moment and savor the time with family. Try to keep multitasking to a minimum. It can also help to connect with your surroundings. Being present means, you are aware of the details of the moment. Oh yeah, and put your smartphone down! This can create a more enjoyable holiday experience.

Tip #4 – Prioritize. With so many activities and obligations during the holidays, it’s crucial to prioritize what is most important. This may include deciding which events to attend, which gifts to purchase, and which tasks to complete. Prioritizing can help reduce stress and ensure that the holidays are enjoyable.

Tip #5 – Communicate. It can be easy to get overwhelmed during the holidays. Therefore, it is important to express your needs and feelings with loved ones. Communication can also involve setting boundaries with family members when needed. Lastly, don’t be afraid to say no. This can ensure everyone is on the same page.

Tip #6 – Practice Gratitude. During the holidays, it is essential to take time to be thankful for what you have and to reflect on what is truly important to you. Take the time to think about meaningful moments or reflect on important relationships. We can also share our gratitude with others through kind words, such as a simple thank you or giving to those less fortunate.

The holidays can be a source of stress for many. Setting expectations, practicing self-care, focusing on the present, prioritizing, communicating, and practicing gratitude can all help to keep stress levels at a minimum during the holidays. With these tips, you can enjoy the holiday season and make lasting memories.
